Meillet compared Latin oculus with hyerogliphic Hittite "tun-akalas" "Eye of
the sun", opinion which is disregarded by Walde-Hoffmann. Some opinions are
the "eye" was first considered as "seeing ohne" and it should derive from
the verb "see". There are languages which still have a verb from "eye" with
the meaning "to look at".
If one thinks there are opinions which sustain that in pre IE there has been
just "e" and "o" as vowels, then the "a" you are looking for should be from
an "o":-)
