As <despoina> 'lady of the house' is the feminine counterpart of
<despote:s>, it can hardly be anything else but *dems-potnih2 > *despotnja
with the simplification of *-tnj- to -nj- prior to the regular C+glide
metathesis (*-onja > -oina). Elements of compounds are typically prone to
segmental reduction.
