On top of that, I realized that Dutch <pakken>, (Low?) German
packen "seize" (and German <Pack>) would also match PIE *pag-, *pak-
"pole; catch" (if indeed it's PIE, not Nordwestblock) if they were
originally Nordwestbock loans. According to Skeats <pac> exists in
Celtic too, both in the sense of "package" and "rabble, crowd".
What's that p- doing there? Loan from Nordwestblock?
<Pack> "rabble" in the sense of "captives"?
I can't help but notice that many supposed Nordwestblock roots have
-a- (sometimes alternating with -o:-). Perhaps that would be a more
probable source of loans of roots with a-vocalism into Latin.
