With due respect to all scholars, as I have pointed out many times,
words in -ull/-ulla/-ill, -or/-ar/-ur are all nouns in PIE stems *-
lo, -lu, -li or -ro, -ra, -ru, because, as we may see also by Latin
loans <ratio, -nis>, Alb. <arsye>, or Lat. <placere>, Alb. <pëlqej>
from much older form <*palqej>, we have in Albanian liquids
metathesis l - i > ë(i) - l, l - o > o - l, l - u > ë (u) - l, r - u
> ë (u) - r, r - o > o - r, r - i > ë (i) - r, _when vowel, preceded
by liquids, is in unstressed position_.
Examples:
I. r - i > ë(i) - r, r - a > a - r
1. <bërtas> 'to shout', aor. <brita>, sub. <britmë>;
2. Illyr. <brisa>, Alb. <bërsi> 'grounds, dregs (of vine)';
3. Lat. frico, -are > Alb. <fërkoj> 'to rub';
3. Sl. <prispeti>, Alb. <përspjet> 'to pop up';
4. Pers. via Turkish <çikrik>, Alb. <çekërk> 'spinning-wheel, winch';
5. Lat. ratio, -onis > Alb. <arsye> 'reason';
6. *kWr.mi- > Alb. <krim> 'womb', but <kërmill> 'nail'.
II. r - u > ë(u) -r
5. *smek'ru > Alb. <mjekër> 'chin, beard';
6. *swek'ru:s > vjehër 'mother-in-law';
III. l - u > u - l, l - o > ë(o) - l
8. *amblu > Alb. <avull> 'steam' (cf. IIr. abru 'cloud', Rom.
<abur> 'steam')
9. *omlos > Alb. Geg. <âmbël>, Tosk. <ëmbël> 'sweet', but
<tâmbël> 'sour milk'.
IV. l - a > ë(a) - l
10. Lat. placere > Alb. <pëlqej> 'to like';
11. Alb. <pëlcas> 'to explode', but aor. <plasa>;
12. Alb. <këlthas> 'to scream', but aor. <klitha>, sub.
<klithmë> 'scream';
Alb. /ll/ is from /l/ in intevocalic position, cf. o:lena > Geg.
llânë, Tosk. llërë.
