I was thinking of a language in which _PIE_ *a and *o merged as *a. Of
course they did in all of Indo-Iranian, but since they also merged in
Germanic, Balto-Slavic and Albanian, to mention just a few groups
geographically closer to Italic, we have more plausible sources to
choose from.
