A long time ago we discussed the etymology of <bake>.
It seems to me there is a connection with <bath>, for the following
reasons:
The (Nordwestblock?) 'agent' suffix -k- in <bake>
The id. 'patient' suffix -þ- (< -t-) in <bath>
The whole procedure: you dig a whole in the ground, put big stones in
the bottom and set a fire in it. Then you throw the raw meat in.
After some time: food (and if the soil is clayey, you might
accidentally have invented pottery).
After the meal you fill the hole with water (remember the hot
stones), using pots or digging a canal to the nearest brook . Bath.
Now where did I get that disgusting idea? Because of the recipe of
the Germanic invention of <soap>, which we also discussed. It is:
Boil animal fats and ashes. Voilà. Soap has been invented.
