As I said, French -x normally has two origins:
- as a ligature for final -us < *-ls
- as a Latinizing spelling for -idz (voiz ~ voix because of vox, etc.)
According to
http://crehangec.free.fr/pic.htm, the etymology of Caix is
simply Quai. The -x is spurious.
