I have never said that. In fact I wouldn't normally use the term "North
Semitic" (I think I only applied it, loosely, to NW Semitic + East Semitic
versus Arabic (=SW Semitic) + South Semitic in connection with the
development of Proto-Semitic *s). The usual divisoon is between East
Semitic (Akkadian, Assyrian-Babylonian), West Semitic ( = NW Semitic
[Ugaritic, Eblaite, Canaanite + Aramaic] + SW Semitic (= Arabic)) and South
Semitic (South Arabian + Ethiopic).
