Allegedly from "Pelasgian" (pre-Greek) *dhm.bhos, like púrgos "tower" from
*bhr.ghos. Characteristic for this layer would be the development /R./ >
/uR/ of the syllabic resonants, and the peculiar variant of Grassmann's Law
(*dh..bh > t..b, **bh..gh > p..g).
