I don't know, but the form [bu:] (I have no idea how it
should be spelled) has also come into fashion in the last
few years, referring affectionately to one's male child
or boyfriend. The latter of course brings to mind "beau".
My nephew calls his three-year old son "bu one" and his
one-year old son "bu two". :-)
