Hy-i-HyeH -mi
I'm following on from an earlier posting, in which I suggested reduplication
of both elements when the first is a laryngeal.
There is depressingly little evidence one way or the other. Roots with
initial HR do not seem to have a reduplicated present in Greek. There are
simply no examples one way or the other that I can find. However there are
a small number of roots where reduplication HR-HRC- + suffix might be
possible, daft though it seems by IE rules.
E.g.: ararisko: to fit ( -> join, equip, be befitting) (a short both times)
aorist e:rsa, e:raron 2 perf. ara:ra
Pokorny takes this back to a root which is clearly arH = h2erH
The present looks like *h2r-h2r-isk-o:
Rix suggests it is a back formation from the reduplicated aorist.
There is (apparently) a Hittite form harp- whcih may be connected.
onine:mi to benefit (short i) is less clear.
aorist o:nh:sa
Pokorny takes this from 1 na: = neh2
Rix gives the root as h3neh2, and suggests the Greek present is
h3n.-n(e)-h2.
oiomai to think epic oi:o: with long -i-
Pokorny takes this back to eis, with a wide metaphor to get to the Greek
meaning.
Wouldn't h3i-h3is-o- work here - if such a form could exist?
elelizw to walk with a limp
Pokorny links it leig', Rix to h1leig'
Rix derives the present from the perfect (which does not exist). To me
this looks like a desperate attempt to explain the present reduplication by
making up a perfect.
h1l-h1lig'-io: would work OK, if such a form existed.
So how far can I push this? How daft is it to suggest HR-HRC- +suffix
(zero grade in root) for Greek?
