Semi-OT?? "Pidai" :: Does anyone on channel know Armenian?

After the USSR collapsed, Armenia had a long hard struggle against
Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan is Muslim and Turkish-speaking. Armenia is
Christian. During that struggle I heard in a UK newspaper of an
Armenian defence group that called itself Pidai. Armenia is certainly
entitled to defend itself :: very much so :: but why the name?!?! I
know little about Armenian, but I think I can recognise the effect of
Armenian phonetics on the Arabic word Fedayeen / Fidaa'iiyiin.
Armenians have extremely little to thank Muslims for, so why did an
Armenian Christian defence group call itself by such a specifically
Islamic name!? Or is the word Pidai etymologizable in native Armenian?
