This is an irregular and probably relatively late truncation (something that
very often happens to fixed phrases and compounds). The whole argument is
about nothing anyway. <$arpe> doesn't derive directly from the sigmatic
nom.sg. *serpe(n)s but from the secondary oblique stem *serpe- (*serpem). I
can't explain it more clearly than I already have done.
