That's what I get from reading Kuhn and Meid. If you admit the
existence of a Nordwestblock, the inevitable conclusion is that the
Germanic language originated further east than the Rhine limes.
Archaeology points to Thuringia. Udolph disagrees heartily, but I
don't think his position is tenable; at the same time he
records "thrusts", ie. migrations from the Thuringia to the north and
the west. Unless he wants to claim Germans conquered Germans leaving
German place names in their wake.
