You are apparently not alone in being skeptical about
'kaufen' <-- 'caupo'.
But if you are postulating *kumb- on the basis of Rom. 'cumpar',
forget it. That's from L. 'comparare' "prepare, provide, obtain".
Cf. It. 'comprare', Sp. 'comprar' (from Buck).
