IE prefix "*s"

I should like to ask which a role played the prefixation with *s in
the IE words.
Does its actualy reflexes in the IE-languages allow to trace back its
function (if any) or every language developed an another function for
the words prefixed with "s"? Its reflexes are actualy more to find in
verbs or in nouns/adjectives?
