As a plausible hypothesis, rather in connection to the name
of a local Polovtsian khan, Bortz-Membrok (the original name
might have been Burç [burtS]), when the Eastern and Southern
parts of today's Romania were provinces of "Cumania" (i.e.
prior to 1235). (Probably onomastically related to the proto-
Hungarian chieftains Bulcsu/Bilcsu [bultSu, biltSu].)
