Even texts are no great help. Latin and Greek colour words are notoriously
difficult to interpret ("purple snow" etc). Just what would "flavus" mean
applied to hair? Anything from mouse to honey to mud to ginger (rufus).
It is applied to the sea (Ennius), and the Tiber.
What is being translated as "blond" may simply be "light brown".
