I think the question assumes that the IE speaking population were a
single, unified people. We should presume the opposite however. It's
likely that they were a collection of seperate bands or tribes that just
simply happened to speak the same language but that didn't see
themselves as all the same people. There may have been many
ethnonyms for what we know term "Indo-Europeans".
