IMO, Szemerenyi (probably badly misspelled) has argued persuasively
that there were original /i/ and /u/ that were unrelated to /j/
and /w/. Likewise I have to agree with him on laryngeals (he posits
only one), which means that the system doesn't reduce to just /e/
modified with laryngeals.
