It's trivially true that all scientific hypotheses are "guesses". The
point is that there are educated guesses supported by data and naive
guesses based on nothing but the guesser's fancy.

It remains to be proved that the symbols amount to a writing system, and
that there's a language behind it. Surely every archaeological culture
was produced by humans speaking a language or a number of languages, but
unless we can learn _anything_ about those languages it's no earthly use
inventing names for them.
