*****GK: Some definitions from my good old
pre-political correctness Merriam Webster's (cop.
1949):

race: 1.The descendants of a common ancestor; a
family, tribe, people, or nation, believed to belong
to the same stock; a lineage; a breed; also, a class
or kind of individuals with common characteristics,
habits, or the like; as, the RACE of doctors./.../ 3.
state of being one of a special ethnical stock, more
narrowly, of a particular group or family/.../ 6.
Ethnol.- a division of mankind possessing constant
traits, transmissible by descent, sufficient to
characterize it as a distinct human type.*****

I suppose that by reference to the first item of 1
above, one may speak of the human race. Superficial
differences, like those of colour, have been
historical favourites for narrower definitions.
Scientifically, "race" seems as elusive a criterion
for classifying humans as "class", yet on the basis of
common sense and perception it would appear that such
classifications, while arbitrary, are well nigh inevitable.
