But then again St. Columba, who spoke Gaelic, could speak with Britons in
Strathclyde, but needed translators to speak with the Picts. I can think
of 2 possibilities:

1. The Britons of Strathclyde knew how to speak Gaelic, and so could
talk to St. Columba, but the Picts, though speaking a Brittonic dialect,
couldn't speak Gaelic and so couldn't talk to St. Columba.

or

2. The language of the Picts was different enough from the Britons to
make Pictish and Brittonic mutually unintelligable, and thus maybe
Pictish was far enough removed Brittonic that it was a seperate Celtic
dialect.

Thoughts?
