I don't think this is true for _Old_ Church Slavonic. The case system is
alive and well, and although some words with suffixed -sI or -tU are found,
there is no definite article as such in OCS.

There's nothing really unusual about az. None of the other personal
pronouns look unusual either (the use of oblique <ny> instead of <my> is
already found consistently in the Kiever Blätter).
