Here's an idea I haven't seen before: the Latin agent suffix -tor,
toris, is connected with the supine stem (and could be seen as being -
-or, -oris added to that). With unstressed -o- > -&- it merges with
the 'native' agent suffix (actually from Latin -arius) -er. Subtract
that (back formation) and the supine stem is now an English word (and
we also know why the other Germanic languages didn't do it).
