They are very similar, though. Remember that the substrate in Romanian
is Albanian-like but it isn't modern Albanian, let alone its literery
form. After 1500 years or so some small differences in suffixation can
be excused :-). Cimochowski reports several dialectal forms from
Albanian, including <modh-në> with a still different suffix.

But Modern Albanian /o/ may derive from earlier *a:, which became /a/ in
Romanian. The unsuffixed base was *ma:d- once upon a time.
