There are some obvious answers which I will ignore.
A more interesting answer is that gladiatorial shows were seen by the
Romans
as specifically Roman, and that the introduction of them was part of the
romanization of an area. When the barbarians wished to show that an
area
was no longer under the control of the Romans, they removed the
gladiatorial
shows.
