no Germanic taste for violent spectacles?

I was watching a Timelife video on Gladiators today and it was mentioned
that the cease of Gladitorial games in the Roman world was caused not
only by Christianity, but increasing Germanic Barbarians, and that public
executions was not part of Germanic culture and that they didn't find
entertainment in exhibitions of fights to the death.

Anyone know why this was so?
