It can't be *as far as* (read: as close as) pavimentum,
since pavimentum is indeed sort of a soil/Erdreich,
based on a verb pavire in Latin. Lat. [pawi] > R. p&-
and -mentum > -mânt are natural evolutions. (Rather
seek relations for pamata in Hungarian pamacsó and
Rumanian p&m&tuf. :))
