For Father's Day last Sunday I got Simon Winchester's book on
Krakatoa. I haven't read it yet, but just now now looking at it, I
see that eruption dated AD 416 in the Indonesian records is thought
to be confusion for a major eruption in AD 535. If so, all the
historical consequences should be reevaluated accordingly. Without
having read the arguments, I'm strongly biased toward skepticism
anyway.
