*accu- (Spa. aquel, Cat. aquest, aquell, Ita. questo, quello, Rom. acest,
acel) is a contamination of <atque> and <eccum> (from <ecce eum>), which
are both abundantly attested in Plautus etc. as emphatic particles preposed
to the demonstrative pronouns, as is also <ecce>.
