I wonder. Perhaps historical _English_ studies are an exception, but my
coleague and good friend Donka Minkova (now at UCLA) must have learnt her
trade somewhere, definitely not in a cave, and if you object that the best
scholars couldn't stay in the country, well, late Andrei Danchev, an
excellent scholar, remained Sophia-based to the end of his life.
