kentum and satem

Current view show Kentum languages as more conservative (so not necessarily monophyletic), while Satem was a monophyletic branch (k^> palatals), but in Kentum languages the shift k^> k must have been very old, to explain the drop of slight palatalization, instead of a more extreme palatalization. Does it show that kentum languages might have been a common origin from the original PIE?
