Yes, it's used to highlight, in this case, the object. (Cf. Ayer,
Elena compró el coche, where "yesterday" is pulled into initial
position).

Spanish, unlike the other Romance languages (except Romanian), does
have animate object marking (he visto _a_ Elena, "I've seen E.").
