Latin diphthongs

Hi,

I'm confused about the pronunciation of some of the Latin diphthongs.

I'm told in Wheelock's book that the diphthongs eu and ui are pronounced
as Latin e + u and u + i respectively. But does this mean long e + u and
long u + i or short? Because the book also says that ui is pronounced
like English gooey, which would seem to mean long vowels, but no macrons
are placed over the vowels in the diphthongs, which is done in beginning
Latin.

-Michael
