"to mouth off", etc.) may be related to this Germanic *klap- "open
mouth", while the second group it seems to me is onomatopoeic, with
perhaps some additional input from Greek kolaphos "blow, strike,
buffet" (> VLat colapus, cólpus > Fr. coup, Cat. cop, Spa. golpe).
