I don't think the lack of inflections in English necessitates the fixed word
order. Italian equally lacks inflexions but in poetry at least, happily
writes VOS and OVS, as well as the more expected VSO, OSV and the common
SVO. The amiguity is often removed only from knowledge of the context or
plain common sense - that is to say, extra-linguistic factors.
