You can stop thinking. It's already been explained. Latin <clave>
gives Macedo-Romanian <kl^ae>. This becomes <kl^ee> > <kyee> > <keye>
in Northern Romanian, with Umlaut a > e after palatal /l^/ similar to
u > i as we see in închid < înkl^ud < includo.
