Dialectally (north Geg) also with <-d-> (<ede, edja>). According to Cimochowski, these forms are older while <ete/etje, etja> are analogical (after the variant <et> from *ed, with final devoicing). He derives the word from *h2aidHos 'fire, burning' (perhaps an original *-es- neuter like Gk. aitHos).
Incidentally, another possible source of Alb. e (via *a) is a syllabic nasal in an umlauting context, and still another is *eu. This embarras de richesses is what makes Albanian etymology so devilishly difficult (and fascinating -- just contemplate the way *wi-dk^m.tih1 changed into <-zet>).
