Usually interpreted as "waltan" = to rule, dominate
(in German: "walten"; "Gewalt" = violence; power in
a state, "Gewaltenteilung" = separation of powers):

Ewald, Grimwald (Grimoald, Grimaldi), Oswald,
Archibald/Arcimboldo, Walt(h)er/Wolter etcetc.

(Does waltan mean vladiti?)
