Don't you mean "points of conflict" :-)  Just because  M. Räsänen wrote about 40 years ago doesn't mean his hypothesis is outdated.  What we need to do is examine BOTH the unities and differences at the same time.

Didn't he write about 40 years ago?   I remember the Ural-Altaic hypothesis
from kindergarten, and I remember the Italo-Celtic unity hypothesis from the
same period, and the Balto-Slavonic unity.   There was a tendency then to
find "unities" where we now find "points of contact".   Hasn't the world
moved on?

So I guess the answer is yes, he's passe.
