were also capable of debunking prior forgeries. The
most famous instance of this is assuredly Lorenzo
Valla's destruction (in 1440) of the authenticity of
the famous Donation of Constantine, which had been
considered authoritative by generations of Canon
lawyers. Interestingly, our Lorenzo, in spite of this,
was able to get himself a job at the papal curia a few
years later. He is also known for his works on the
