Actually, *n. > *a > a/e (depending on the environment). The development of syllabic nasals is supported by many examples. What I was thinking of was:

*Hn.gni- > *agni- > *enjë (preserved as enj- in the 'Thursday' compound)

IOW, the nasal in <enj-> is genetically a reflex of the _second_ *n of *Hn.gnis.
