John asked:
Does anyone know if there is a variant spelH- in any language of the root pelH-?
(Pokorny 798, the root that gives rise to "polis" and "-pore" as in Singapore?
In other words a variant analogous to the *speik- form of *peik- and the *spen-
(going to Germanic *spinnan) form of *pen- (giving Latin pendere).

There is no variant *spelH- from the root *pelH-; the Ide. rood for "polis" is
*puol-H- (u semivocalic); from this rood comes also sanscrit "pur" (long u) and
lithuanian "pilis"; regards...
