In fact, Slavic *o and *a developed from earlier *a and *a:. Slavic had no segmental contrast between */karl-/ and */korl-/, and the latter was the only way of Slavicising Germanic *karl-. Compare *walh- --> *volxU (> vlax, volox, vlox).
