Don't repeat my errors, Alex, especially those to which I have just admitted in front of the list :-). Miguel did not mention /ie/ in this derivation, and rightly so, because Lat. /i/ (unlike Lat. /e/, as in <verme->) did not develop into /ie/! If the Latin word had been *<verdia>, it would have developed into *vErdia > *vierdia > *viearzã > *viarzã. But <virdia> developed, as shown by Miguel, into verdia (a different vowel!) > vearzã > varzã. Everything is OK here.
