Whoops! -- a howler on my part. <ples'n'> comes from *ple^snI, unrelated to the "hair/felt" set. I was writing in haste and it merged in my tired brain with <pils'n'> 'felt', derived from <pils'c'> < *pIlstI.

Both are from *pil-s-, compare Slavic *pIlstI 'felt', Polish ples'n' < *pIlsnI 'mould, fungus'. Without the *-s- extension we have Latin pilus 'hair'. Piotr
