Such is the glamour of the Goths (and the Alani). Another widely circulated popular etymology is Catalonia = "Gotalandia", equally unacceptable from the formal point of view.

I would agree with you there, Piotr - I wonder why so many support
the *Goth-Alaunia etymology? It seems very widespread.
