english should be in the latin rather than germanic group ??

ok ...simple question for you people ....i looked at a
couple of langiuages sites a few dauys ago and saw
english listed among the german group .....but french
in the latin-romansch group ....but from what i know
on a word for word basis english is closer to french
than german ??? can you please giv e me your inoputs
.....am i correct or what or does it refer to sentence
structure or something else or eperhaps is there a
socio-ethnic element coming in ?? thanks a million in advance ....
