I have copies of BOTH the articles of Meadow referred to by Witzel.
THEY DO NOT state that the horse bones at Mohenjodaro or Harappa came
from disturbed/eroded layers. That is Witzel's own interpretation,
another case of name-dropping. Meadow (1998) refers only to a book by
B P Sahu on horse remains, and this book was published in 1988. Is
Witzel then trying to say that there have been no reports of equid
remains from Harappan sites post 1988?
The 1998 article at best refers to Camel remains, which seemed
intrusive because of their very context, and then the C-14 dating
info is given. And in discussing this animal, Meadow then remarks
that outer layers seem disturbed.
In any case, Witzel and Meadow (in his articles) both choose to
ignore the other horse
findings from Shikarpur, Kuntasi, Malvan.....all from Mature Harappan
levels, reported by competent zoo-archaeologists (notably P.K.
Thomas, who obviously cannot be a Hindutva supporter as his name
would show).
Some people see horses everywhere, others bury their heads in the
sands of Indus to avoid seeing them.
The article is prefaced by usual political propaganda by His
Omniscience, who is unaware of the fact that many such projects have
been sponspored by previous Indian governments in 'Secular' days.
Foreign scholars should not meddle in Indian politics, they should
rather look into their own domestic affairs where anti-Semitism is on
the rise, and racist slogans like 'Mein kinder, nein Inder' often
rent the air.
Sincerely,
Vishal Agarwal
